What We Know So Far: Details on the Redesigned Lexus RX & Its New Electrified Powertrains

“We’re breathing new life into the segment-leading RX with enhanced safety and technology, human-centered design, and undeniable performance from a diverse mix of powertrains,” said Andrew Gilleland, group vice president, and general manager, Lexus Division. Since the RX’s initial launch over 20 years ago, the Lexus RX has remained the gold standard of luxury crossover SUVs. Not only did the RX launch an entirely new car segment to the market, but Lexus was the first luxury brand to offer a hybrid in the segment. That’s one of many reasons why it seems a little like destiny for the new 2023 RX to introduce a variety of electrified powertrains with this next-generation re-launch.

The 2023 RX will be available in four new powertrain options, including a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) model. The introduction of these new electrified powertrains supports the brand’s larger Lexus Electrified Vision that illustrates the continued progress toward supporting evolution, education, and understanding that electrified vehicles can provide exhilarating performance.* Using the RX platform and its worldwide popularity to help contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society, while staying close to the increasingly diversified needs and lifestyles of the greater Lexus family of drivers and guests.

Meet the Electrified Powertrains of the 2023 Lexus RX

  • The RX 350 (FWD/AWD) offers a 2.4L turbocharged inline-4 engine for torque-filled, dynamic driving performance.
  • The RX 350h (AWD) fourth-generation large-capacity fuel-efficient hybrid system features a front unit that integrates a high-torque 2.5L inline-4 engine.
  • The RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid vehicle is still under wraps for the US market, but Lexus plans to share it at a later time.
  • The Lexus RX 500h F SPORT Performance introduces a new hybrid-electric system for the Lexus brand with a front unit that integrates a high-torque 2.4-liter turbo engine, six-speed automatic transmission, inverter, and an electric motor, with an eAxle rear unit that integrates a high output electric motor, inverter, and reduction gearbox. Long story short, this setup will provide improved performance, quick acceleration, and high torque throughout its rev range, delivering powerful acceleration even at higher speeds.

The real jewel in this new electrified powertrain line-up is of course the very first Lexus RX 500h F SPORT Performance which promises to go beyond the current generation of F SPORT by matching performance with an amplified design package for a sportier, more performance-driven look and feel. In addition to all that it has going on under the hood, the new RX 500h features opposed six-piston brake calipers, mesh grille, front bumper, and 21-inch aluminum wheels that exude a wide, confident stance but also contribute to its impressive aerodynamic performance.

Step inside the RX and you’ll find a host of F SPORT accents including the perforated leather-trimmed steering wheel with paddle shifters, suede-trimmed interior door trim, F SPORT scuff plate, leather-trimmed interior, aluminum sport pedals (still one of our all-time favorite F SPORT features!), and much more. 2023 Lexus RX Design Details

The 2023 Lexus RX definitely grabs your attention and at first sight, it may look almost unrecognizable to the long-time RX owner – you know what we’re talking about. The 2023 RX builds on the foundation of the Lexus spindle grille design (obviously) and evolves into a new, cohesive spindle body design, as explained in the Lexus Pressrelease. Lexus continues to say that the new sleek, dynamic design is symbolized by a sense of solid mass. The sculpted grille with integrated headlamps is central to the new spindle body design and is used to further strengthen and evolve the aesthetic. The low center of gravity is accented by standard 19-inch wheels with a dark gray machined finish and color-keyed over-fenders. For those wanting to upgrade their wheels, as most of us living in the Rio Grande Valley do, 21-inch wheels are available in a variety of variations. The back of the RX inherits the signature L-shaped light bar lamp with lenses that wrap around to the sides of the body which further emphasizes its wider silhouette.

What else? The new Lexus RX will offer loads of updated technology, including the latest Lexus Multimedia Interface system, Digital Key, Lexus Assistant, Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, and more advanced features that you can currently check out on the new Lexus NX and LX.

The 2023 Lexus RX is bold in design and definitely delivers updated performance, multimedia, and standard safety systems that we are confident new and returning RX drivers will absolutely enjoy. We look forward to showing the Rio Grande Valley all that the new Lexus RX has to offer soon.
