Is Lexus Maintenance Expensive?

Lexus service technician working on car

If you’re interested in buying a Lexus in the Mcallen area–or if you’ve just bought one–you might be wondering about Lexus maintenance costs. The best way to keep your Lexus in the best condition possible is to come in for regular maintenance–these include services like oil changes, tire rotations, and general inspections. One question that a lot of drivers ask us is this: is Lexus maintenance expensive? After all, Lexus is a renowned luxury brand, so you might think that maintenance is pricier than the average vehicle. However, compared to other luxury automakers, the cost of Lexus maintenance is actually relatively low! Our service team has all the details in the guide below.

Lexus Maintenance Cost Rankings

For our Lexus maintenance cost review, we’ve taken data from three key agencies: RepairPal, Consumer Reports, and YourMechanic. Each of these agencies has studied the cost of owning, maintaining, and repairing Lexus vehicles compared to other luxury brands. Here are the details:

Kelley Blue Book

In both 2019 and 2014, Lexus won the Kelley Blue Book 5-Year Cost to Own Best Brand category, which factored in projected resale value, insurance and state fees, fuel cost estimates, maintenance, repairs, and more. This is what KBB had to say:

  • “Lexus has an established record of offering vehicles that are desirable both new and used while delivering quality, reliability and low-cost operation across the board.”

RepairPal

According to RepairPal, Lexus ranks 7th out of 32 car brands for reliability, and a large part of that ranking is their low maintenance costs. The agency estimates that the average Lexus costs about $551 per year to maintain, compared to the national average of $652. By comparison, the average BMW costs around $968 to maintain per year, while the average Mercedes-Benz costs $908.

Consumer Reports

The opening to Consumer Reports’ study on Lexus reliability notes that “Lexus proves that technologically-advanced luxury vehicles can also be very reliable.” In fact, their most recent reliability study had Lexus come in second overall! In a 2017 study that ranked the cost of car ownership over time, Lexus ranked #12 out of 32, well ahead of other luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Jaguar, Volvo, Mini, Porsche, and Acura.

YourMechanic

Finally, let’s take a look at some data from YourMechanic. They recently conducted a study ranking the 30 most popular car brands from most to least expensive. The top spots for the most expensive cars to own were occupied by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, Volvo, Audi, and Saturn. Lexus was near the bottom of the list–28th out of 30! They were only beaten out for affordability by Scion and Toyota, even more affordable to maintain than reliable brands like Honda, Subaru, and Volkswagen.
